Dutch flower export business
Holland is the most famous country in the world when we talk about cut flowers, plants and bulbs. More than 60% of the world trade in flowers and plants takes place through Dutch flower auctions. Holland has a lot of bulb fields and growers, but is also know because of its big amount of export companies. Around 650 flower and plant export companies are established in the Netherlands, most of them located on or around one of the flower auctions of Flora Holland in Aalsmeer (the biggest flower auction in the world), Rijnsburg or Naaldwijk. The total export value of flowers and plants in Holland is € 5,6 billion in 2015.
Flowers are one of the main export products in the Netherlands and especially tulips and roses. To be able to trade all year long, Holland also imports a lot of flowers from countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, Colombia, Ecuador and Israel. This makes Holland not only one of largest flower exporter but also the most important importer of flowers and plants of the European Union.
Dutch export companies sell flowers to almost every country in the world. It developed itself as the center of an international network for the floriculture industry. Every day thousands of trucks with flowers, plants and bulbs are exported to foreign countries in Europe, but also outside Europe. This is the most used way of transport for flowers and plants. But also a lot of the flowers and plants are exported by plane to arrive earlier at the destination. This is mostly used for long distances only, because it is a very expensive way of transport. Nowadays it is even possible to buy flowers in Holland and deliver them on the same day in for example New York. Also a very important aspect of flower and plant export is conditioned transport. It demands flexibility and good logistic systems to export these products in the right conditions to its final destination. That’s why Holland also has a lot of transport companies specialized in conditioned transport.
