This morning, choose between a relaxed or more active way to discover the charm of Budapest. The Welcome to Budapest tour features a visit to the magnificent Budapest Opera House, followed by a guided exploration of both Buda and Pest. Highlights include Heroes' Square, the fairytale-like Fisherman’s Bastion, and the historic Matthias Church.
Guests opting for the more active experience can expect extended walking, cobbled streets, steps, and uphill climbs—but will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views and access to hidden gems not reachable by coach.
In the afternoon, enjoy free time to explore Budapest at your leisure or join your Tauck Directors for an optional visit to the famous Dohány street Synagogue. The day concludes with a festive reception and dinner at the elegant Hungarian Academy of Sciences, accompanied by traditional local entertainment.
Budapest, the capital city of Hungary, is a charming blend of the old and the new, with a rich history and vibrant culture. The city was founded in 1873, as a result of the unification of three separate towns: Buda, Pest, and Óbuda.
The merger of these three towns was a long-awaited event, as it would bring together the two sides of the Danube River - Buda on the west and Pest on the east - which were previously divided by the river. The town of Óbuda, located in the north, was also included in the unification process.
The reasons behind the merger were mainly practical. The towns were growing rapidly, and there was a need to streamline the administration and infrastructure development. The unified city of Budapest became the center of politics, culture, and commerce in Hungary, and was established as one of the most important cities in Europe.
The new city reflected the best of both worlds. The Buda side of the city, with its hills, castles, and thermal baths, was known for its historic charm and cultural attractions. Meanwhile, the Pest side of the city was a bustling hub of commercial and political activity, with a vibrant nightlife and modern infrastructure.
Over time, Budapest has continued to evolve and grow, while maintaining its unique character and identity. Today, it remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, attracting millions of visitors each year with its stunning architecture, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant urban life.
